Growing Our Own

The Growing Our Own Native American Students, Staff and Faculty (GONASF) program was supported by a grant from Indian Health Services (U26IHS300291-01, 09/01/2009 to 08/31/2014 [NCE]). The GONASF program was a collaboration among Northwest Indian College, the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute at the University of Washington, and Washington State University to support pipeline efforts between the only accredited tribal college in Washington State and two research universities to increase the numbers of American Indian/Alaska Natives in health sciences careers.

Team members on the project included NWIC Co-PIs Drs. Bernice Portervint and William L. Freeman, UW PI Dr. Tessa Evans-Campbell (Snohomish), Co-I Polly Olsen (Yakama), and WSU PI Dr. Robbie Paul (Nez Perce) and Co-I Dr. Janet Katz. The team collaborated on student outreach and recruitment events, identified a network of supportive AI/AN staff and faculty at each institution to refer potential or current students to for academic mentoring, and hosted networking and social opportunities for AI/AN students, staff and faculty.
