Journey of Transformation

Journey of Transformation is a culturally-centered experiential 8-week school-based positive youth health leadership development intervention to prevent substance use among youth.

The Journey of Transformation is a research study in partnership with Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board. We are trying to learn more about a new curriculum available to sophomore students in high school. The lessons will include traditional storytelling, community connectedness, healthy peer relationships, health and wellness, and cultural arts activities plus Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) activities. The purpose of this study is to know how well the curriculum supports Native youth leadership skills and promotes healthy decision-making around health and relationships.

The program involves a 2-month intervention including a Native-centered curriculum on health and healthy relationships, traditional storytelling and culturally relevant arts activities that target behavior change relative to health, healthy decision-making, and youth leadership.

3 years of interventions

Journey of Transformation (JOT) is entering it's third year of research and intervention in the Fall of 2025.

Over 100 participants

To date, over 100 high school sophomores have participated in the Journey of Transformation research study, participating in session activities and cultural story-sharing
