Itzá: Indigenous HIV/AIDS Research Training 3 (IHART3) Program: Program Eligibility

This program is open to early stage investigators (ESI) who are up to 10 years post-Ph.D. and interested in developing novel expertise in HIV prevention research. Post-doctoral trainees are required to have received their PhD, MD, DDS, or comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution by the beginning of their appointment to the Itza program.

Additionally, potential trainee candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

(1) self-identify as an American Indian Alaska Native (AIAN) (First Nation, Inuit, Metis), Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander, or as an Indigenous person from the U.S. or U.S. territories or North America, including Canada or Mexico, Central or South America (e.g., Yaqui); OR self-identify as belonging to a socioeconomic or rural background or racial/ethnic group that is underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research in accordance with NIH Notice NIH PAS-06-447 AND is a member of an Indigenous household, family, or community; AND currently conducting or is committed to conducting research with Indigenous communities in the Americas and U.S. Island Territories;

(2) have a Ph.D. or M.D. in a field that supports the candidate’s research interests;

(3) intend to develop a program of HIV research with a focus on co-morbid factors such as trauma, mental health, and substance abuse with Native communities;

(4) have not previously served as a PI on an NIH RO1 (over $250,000); and

(5) intend to develop and submit a grant proposal for federal extramural funding at the NIH.

NOTE:

  1. At least one (1) spot in each cohort will be filled by training fellows from the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho).
  2.  Remaining training fellows will be selected from the national pool of eligible trainees regardless of region (inclusive of Hawaii, Alaska, and U.S. territories).
  3. Fellows must commit to attending all on-site training events.
